BULGARIANS TO TRAVEL VISA-FREE TO THE USA

After the House of Representatives the US Senate has also approved the security bill with the amendment on the visa regime with Bulgaria and other 12 states. This is a bow to the partners of the USA in the fight with terrorism. Ambassador of Bulgaria in Washington, HE Elena Poptodorova told Standart when visas for Bulgarian nationals traveling to the USA would be lifted

- Mrs. Poptodorova, when will the Bulgarians travel visa-free to the USA, in your opinion?
- It is difficult to say right now, mainly because of the advancing primary campaign for the presidential elections in 2008. The most important thing, though, is that the project is underway. Hopefully, by the summer we will have concerted a text ready for a vote. When I say "summer" I mean a term we would like to hope for. Soon the Congress will have an Easter vacation that will slow down the procedure a little.
- Apart from George Voinovich, a Republican Senator of Ohio, who is a mover of the promising amendment, who else is lobbying for it?
- I dare say that the Bulgarian embassy in Washington has had a great contribution. We have had personal talks on the issue with Senator Voinovich and took part in the discussions on the EU level. Initially, Mr. Voinovich proposed a visa-free regime for only five countries. We, however, firmly insisted not to limit the number. Now I'm very happy that thanks to our energetic and public response Senator Voinovich approved the expanded version of the amendment.
- Could it happen that President Bush declines to undersign the bill after it is voted in the Senate?
- Theoretically it is possible. It depends on what objections would be made. Yet, the initiative for a visa-waiver program for the Bulgarians is a response to the November speech of President Bush at a NATO summit in Tallinn, so I do not see this possibility as tangible.
