Romano Prodi met Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev during a
visit to Bulgaria. Prodi wore the symbol of the campaign in favour
of the nurses.
Italian prime minister Romano Prodi met Libyan leader Muammar Gaddaffi and the two discussed developments in the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya for intentional HIV infection.
The two met during the summit of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Bulgarian National Radio reported.
Focus news agency quoted Prodi as saying that he inquired about the trial as the problem has been ongoing for eight years already.
Gaddaffi responded that the problem with the provision of compensation for the families of the infected children has not been resolved either. Compensation provision had to be dealt with before the trial was over, said Gaddaffi.
Still Libya was to consider the recommendations of Europe and Italy, said Gaddaffi as quoted by Reuters news agency.
Bulgarian National Radio reported that Italy previously accepted the commitment to act as intermediary in finding solution to the problem.
During the summit in Addis Ababa, Prodi called for a moratorium on the death penalty.
